Aston Villa sign left-back Ian Maatsen from Chelsea for reported £37.5m fee

Aston Villa have announced the signing of left-back Ian Maatsen from Premier League rivals Chelsea for a reported £37.5m. The Netherlands international was part of the Borussia Dortmund team beaten by Real Madrid in last season’s Champions League final during a season-long loan move from Stamford Bridge.

Maatsen, who is currently with his country at Euro 2024 in Germany, becomes Unai Emery’s second summer signing following the arrival of forward Lewis Dobbin from Everton. Villa are preparing for Champions League football next season after finishing fourth in the top flight.

Court order bans encampments in LSE building after pro-Palestine protest

University sought order after students slept in building for more than a month in response to report about LSE’s Gaza-linked investments

The London School of Economics has been granted a court order indefinitely barring encampments in one of its buildings after students slept in its atrium for more than a month in support of Palestine.

Several students set up the camp in the atrium of the ground floor of the Marshall Building in central London on 14 May, vowing to remain there until LSE met its demands.

Andy Murray has been drawn to start against the world No 38 Czech Tomas Machac in the men’s Wimbledon singles draw if he can prove his fitness in time.

The good news for the Scot is that he was drawn in the opposite half to defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and would therefore start on Tuesday rather than Monday, giving him an extra day to try to recover from back surgery on a spinal cyst.

The British No 1 Boulter, who registered a last-four win over Raducanu 11 days ago en route to retaining the Nottingham Open title, slipped to a 6-1, 7-6 (0) loss against the French Open finalist Jasmine Paolini.

Met officer charged over alleged theft of money from body of dead man

Craig Carter, 51, charged with misconduct in public office, is suspended from duty and will appear in court on Friday

A Metropolitan police officer has been charged with misconduct after allegedly stealing money from the body of a man who had died.

PC Craig Carter, 51, is due to appear at Westminster magistrates court on Friday after being charged with misconduct in public office over the alleged incident. He is alleged to have stolen money from a man who had collapsed and died in Harringay in north London in September 2022.

A watercolour drawing for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone has fetched a record amount at auction.

The artwork for the cover of the first book in the JK Rowling series fetched $1.9m (£1.5m) at a sale by Sotheby’s auction house in New York on Wednesday.

Jordan McSweeney killed the 35-year-old aspiring lawyer as she walked home from a night out in Ilford in the early hours of 26 June 2022, nine days after he was released from prison on licence.

Dubois vows to become ‘king slayer’ at Wembley in IBF title fight with Joshua

Daniel Dubois promised to become the “king slayer” after it was confirmed he will face Anthony Joshua for the IBF heavyweight belt on 21 September.

The fight at Wembley was announced on Wednesday following the confirmation by current title holder Oleksandr Usyk that he will vacate the world title. The Ukrainian became the first heavyweight to hold the IBF, WBO, WBA and WBC belts when he defeated Tyson Fury in Saudi Arabia last month but was set to be stripped of the IBF title, with the body stipulating he must face its mandatory challenger Dubois in order to retain it.
