Officials say the AI-enabled campaign to spread pro-Kremlin propaganda involved 1,000 social media accounts

The US Department of Justice said on Tuesday that it disrupted a Russian operation that used fake social media accounts enhanced by artificial intelligence to covertly spread pro-Kremlin messages in the United States and abroad.

The news comes four months before the US presidential election, which security experts widely believe will be the target of both hacking and covert social media influence attempts by foreign adversaries. Senior US officials have said publicly they are monitoring for schemes intended to disrupt the vote.

Meta expands hate speech policy to remove more posts targeting 'Zionists'

Meta says it would remove content ‘attacking “Zionists” when it is not explicitly about the political movement’

Meta Platforms said on Tuesday it would start taking down more posts that target “Zionists” when the term is used to refer to Jewish people and Israelis rather than representing supporters of the political movement.

The Facebook and Instagram parent said in a blog post it would remove content “attacking ‘Zionists’ when it is not explicitly about the political movement” and uses antisemitic stereotypes or threatens harm through intimidation or violence directed against Jews or Israelis.

Ducati’s reigning world champion Francesco Bagnaia went top of the MotoGP championship after winning the German Grand Prix on Sunday ahead of Marc Márquez after title rival Jorge Martín crashed while he was leading the race with two laps to go.

Márquez’s brother Álex finished third to make it two brothers on a MotoGP podium for the first time since Japan’s Nobuatsu and Takuma Aoki finished second and third in Imola 27 years ago.

Sergio Rochet saved Brazil’s first penalty in the shootout from Éder Militão while his teammate Douglas Luiz hit the post. Brazil keeper Alisson Becker denied José Giménez but Manuel Ugarte buried the decisive spot kick.

Canada hold nerve in penalty shootout to set up Copa América semi-final with Argentina

Canada claimed a 4-3 penalty shootout win over Venezuela on Friday to reach the Copa América semi-finals for the first time after an absorbing contest finished 1-1.

With the teams all square after five attempts each, Wilker Ángel had his spot-kick saved by Maxime Crépeau in the shootout and Ismaël Koné buried the winning penalty to send Canada through.

Hurricane Beryl has made landfall as a category 2 storm in Mexico’s top tourist destinations, triggering a red alert in the region following its deadly trail of destruction across several Caribbean islands.

The storm’s core shifted over the Yucatán, with winds slowing to approximately 100mph (160km/h) as it reached the north-eastern region of Tulum, famed for its white-sand beaches, lush landscapes and Mayan ruins.

Ola Kalucka remembers sitting at breakfast with her twin sister Natalia on the morning of the final Olympic qualification round for speed climbing last month. Both had enough points to make the Polish team in Paris, but only one could.

“It was hard because I knew that I needed to fight my sister,” Ola recalled. “We were crying, because we were highly aware that it was going to be a bittersweet evening for us.” Although world champion Natalia was five points in front on the morning of the finals in Budapest, Ola finished ahead of her and secured the Olympic spot.

Amazon founder and executive chair Jeff Bezos is planning to sell almost $5bn worth of shares in the e-commerce giant, a regulatory filing showed, after its stock hit a record high.

The proposed sale of 25m shares was disclosed in a notice filed after market hours on Tuesday. The stock had hit an all-time high of $200.43 during the session. It has jumped more than 30% so far this year, outpacing the 4% gain in the Dow Jones Industrial Average index.

New Cuban radar site near US military base could aid China spying – report

Satellite images appear to show that Cuba is building a new radar site likely to be capable of spying on the US’s nearby Guantánamo Bay naval base, in the latest upgrade to the country’s surveillance capabilities long thought to be linked to China.

The base, under construction since 2021 but previously not publicly reported, is east of the city of Santiago de Cuba near the El Salao neighborhood, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) said in a report published on Monday and later referenced by the Wall Street Journal.
