Euro 2024 Golden Boot: top goalscorers, game by game

1 July 2024 at 10:24

Keep up with who is winning the battle to be top scorer at the European Championship in Germany, updated throughout the tournament

The Golden Boot is awarded to the player who scores the most goals in the tournament. If there are multiple players with the same number of goals, the tie is broken by assists – as was the case at Euro 2020, where Cristiano Ronaldo (five goals, one assist) edged out Czech striker Patrik Schick (five goals, no assists).

If the top scorers also have equal assists, the winner will be the player with the fewest total minutes in the tournament. This happened at Euro 2012, where Spain’s Fernando Torres (189 minutes) pipped Mario Gomez of Germany (282 minutes) after both men notched three goals and one assist each.

Euro 2024: Our writers pick their England XIs to face Slovakia

29 June 2024 at 04:31

Gareth Southgate has some big decisions to make for the last-16 tie; here is who our writers in Germany would select

After three sluggish group-stage performances, England urgently need to find their groove against Slovakia in Gelsenkirchen. Should Gareth Southgate reshuffle his attack, and is it time to risk Luke Shaw at left-back? Our writers pick their starting XIs below …

I would persist with Jude Bellingham in the No 10 role, which flies in the face of his performances against Denmark and Slovenia. But I just feel that as the team look/ pray for a click, Bellingham has the potential to drive it. After all of the criticism, he will be fiercely motivated; the key will be for him to master his emotions. Phil Foden has had quite the week off the field; far from ideal in terms of his preparations. He can affect the game off the bench. Kobbie Mainoo provides security on the ball, the ability to get the team up the pitch and it is time for Anthony Gordon on the left – for his threat in behind and for balance because Trippier will not overlap from left-back. Everybody is waiting for Luke Shaw but it would be too risky to start him after so long out and also because there are hopefully more games to come. Cole Palmer’s X-factor on the right stands to make a difference. David Hytner

USMNT at risk of early Copa América exit after chaotic defeat to Panama

27 June 2024 at 21:05

José Fajardo beat backup goalkeeper Ethan Horvath in the 83rd minute to give Panama a 2-1 victory over the US at the Copa América on Thursday night, putting the Americans in danger of elimination if they don’t beat Uruguay in their group-stage finale.

In a chaotic game that saw the two sides combine for 22 fouls, the US played for most of the match a man down. Timothy Weah was shown a red card in the 18th minute after he struck Panama defender Roderick Miller away from the ball.

‘We weren’t a punching bag’: verdicts from Euro 2024 countries who are out

27 June 2024 at 10:00

Anger, confusion and disappointment were among the emotions in the nations eliminated in group stage

Poland were the last team to qualify (their penalty shootout playoff win in Cardiff finished later than Ukraine’s and Georgia’s games) so it is no great surprise they bowed out first, being the only side to lose their opening two matches. The 36-year Robert Lewandowski is insisting on carrying on despite the public having doubts and his penalty (scored at the second attempt) in a 1-1 draw with France was a consolation for the Barcelona striker. The respected Polish journalist Michal Okonski summed up Poland’s tournament by writing: “Poland saved its face. It’s got the face of Kacper Urbanski” – referring to the 19-year-old youngest member of the squad, who at Thiago Motta’s Bologna has learned to play without fear.

“Gone in 60 Seconds,” declared the front page of the Scottish Sun. “Down and Out,” said the Daily Record. The Record showed Scott McTominay with head in hands, the Sun providing a shot of Steve Clarke consoling the Manchester United midfielder. Coverage of another Scotland group-stage exit has been twofold. The Tartan Army, who have captured hearts and minds across Germany, take up a lot of the column inches as tens of thousands of Scots beat a hasty march home. There has also been stark criticism of Clarke for what is perceived as an overly negative approach, particularly against Hungary in a must-win fixture. The manager faces an uphill task to remove that label of over-caution. Clarke’s emphasising of a non-European referee during the Hungary defeat – in which Scotland were denied a late penalty – has drawn ridicule at home.

England to play Slovakia in the last 16 of Euro 2024

26 June 2024 at 16:57
  • Southgate’s England topped group C with five points
  • Winner of last-16 game will play Italy or Switzerland

England will play Slovakia in the last 16 of Euro 2024. The two teams will meet in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday for a place in the quarter-finals, where Switzerland or Italy awaits.

Gareth Southgate’s side has been heavily criticised after one win and two draws and largely uninspiring performances in Germany. However, they topped Group C and are now on what looks like the easier side of the draw.
