Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone lowered her world record once again, running the 400m hurdles in 50.65 seconds on Sunday at the US Olympic trials.
In only her fourth 400m hurdles race of the season, the 24-year-old defending Olympic champion cleared all 10 barriers with ease, then went on a dead sprint to the line to break the record for the fifth time. Four of those marks have now come on the track at University of Oregonβs Hayward Field.

Hurricane Beryl strengthened into what experts called an βextremely dangerousβ category 4 storm as it approaches the south-east Caribbean, which began shutting down Sunday amid urgent pleas from government officials for people to take shelter.
Beryl had strengthened into a category 3 hurricane on Sunday morning, becoming the first major hurricane east of the Lesser Antilles on record for June, according to Philip Klotzbach, Colorado State University hurricane researcher.

A 13-year-old was killed Friday in Utica after police stopped two youths in connection with armed robbery investigation
Video released late Saturday shows an officer in upstate New York fatally shooting a 13-year-old boy who had been tackled to the ground after he ran from police and pointed a replica handgun at them.
The teen was killed late Friday in Utica after officers in the city about 240 miles (400km) north-west of Manhattan stopped two youths a little after 10pm in connection with an armed robbery investigation, police said.

Pete Arredondo and Adrian Gonzales first officers to face charges in one of deadliest US school shootings, reports say
The former Uvalde schools police chief and another former officer have been indicted over their role in the slow police response to the 2022 massacre at a Texas elementary school that left 19 children and two teachers dead, according to multiple reports on Thursday.
The Uvalde Leader-News and the San Antonio Express-News reported that Pete Arredondo, the former schools police chief, and Adrian Gonzales, a former officer, were indicted by a grand jury on multiple counts of felony child endangerment and abandonment. The Leader-News reported that Christina Mitchell, the local district attorney, confirmed the indictment.

Months-long fires spewed about the same amount of carbon dioxide that 647m cars put in the air in a year, data shows
Catastrophic Canadian warming-fueled wildfires last year pumped more heat-trapping carbon dioxide into the air than India did by burning fossil fuels, setting ablaze an area of forest larger than the US state of West Virginia, new research has found.
Scientists at the World Resources Institute and the University of Maryland calculated how devastating the impacts of the months-long fires in Canada in 2023 that sullied the air around large parts of the globe. They figured it put 3.28bn tons (2.98 metric tons) of heat-trapping carbon dioxide into the air, according to a study update published in Thursdayβs Global Change Biology. The update is not peer-reviewed, but the original study was.
