The Conservatives suffered disastrous results in Wales, but experts have warned that challenging times lie ahead for Welsh Labour under Keir Starmer.

Among the poor results for the Tories was the loss of the Vale of Glamorgan, where the former Welsh secretary Alun Cairns was beaten by Labour. Labour regained Bridgend in south Wales and Wrexham in the north from the Tories, while Plaid Cymru took Ynys Môn (Anglesey).

Auctioneers taken aback by high price fetched by porcelain collected by local woman’s grandfather during Boxer rebellion

Gill Stewart was in her attic rooting around for the Christmas decorations when she came upon the box unpromisingly labelled “broken porcelain” passed on to her by her grandfather 20 years before.

Her first instinct was to put it in the bin but, happily, she decided to take it to an auctioneer on the off-chance, and the pieces have netted her a very pleasant £160,000.

A military doctor should have flagged up concerns about the mental health of 18-year-old Connor MacKenzie Clark when he confided two days before his death that he had self-harmed, senior coroner Philip Spinney said.

‘Perfect storm of failings’ led to death of Connor MacKenzie Clark, 18, at Devon military training centre

Tracy Clark had understandably mixed emotions when her 18-year-old son, Connor MacKenzie Clark, packed his bags and left home to take part in a training course for the Royal Marines.

“It felt nerve-racking, really awful in a way, but I was so proud of him for having the courage to chase his dream,” Tracy told the Guardian. “I thought he was physically and emotionally strong enough. He was nervous but incredibly excited.”

Members of the Senedd described it as a historic moment that would combat the “existential threat” that lying in politics poses to democracy.

Danielle Carr-Gomm, 71, who stopped taking insulin for diabetes at Wiltshire workshop, had praised Hongchi Xiao

A woman with diabetes who died after stopping her insulin while taking part in a four-day slapping therapy workshop regarded the person who ran the retreat as a “messenger sent by God”, a jury has heard.

Danielle Carr-Gomm, 71, wrote glowing testimonials about Hongchi Xiao saying she believed he was starting a revolution in healthcare, Winchester crown court was told.
