Campaigners angry that marital rape is not to be criminalised under Indiaβs long-awaited new penal code have been promised a ruling on the issue by the supreme court next month.
Human rights organisations, including the All India Democratic Womenβs Association, have been petitioning Indiaβs supreme court to make it a criminal offence. The court has in turn asked the government for a response.
