TV tonight: it’s a dog’s life for one down-on-their-luck model

Michelle de Swarte’s semi-autobiographical take on her materialist former life is a gleeful romp. Plus: war arrives in Westeros – and how! Here’s what to watch this evening

10pm, BBC Two
Model turned standup comic and actor Michelle de Swarte is a naturally magnetic performer (she was excellent in 2022’s horror comedy The Baby), so this is a very exciting writer/director/star debut. Inspired by De Swarte’s real life, Spent follows Mia, a model pushing 40 who flees the US after declaring bankruptcy because, after growing up with nothing, she cannot resist the finer things in life. She returns to Brixton, where her friends and family don’t exactly welcome her with open arms and her agent (Peepshow’s Super Hans actor, Matt King) only has one gig for her – dog sitting. But how long can she keep hiding that she’s skint and sofa-surfing? Sharp, funny and an easy binge. Hollie Richardson

The Iron Claw to Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F – the seven best films to watch on TV this week

Jeremy Allen White and Zac Efron are terrific in a bone-breaking wrestling biopic, and Eddie Murphy resurrects the wisecracking Axel Foley!

Sean Durkin’s A24 wrestling biopic was initially touted as an Oscar contender and, while that didn’t come to pass, it’s nevertheless a tremendous piece of film-making. Telling the story of the Von Erich family, a clutch of athletic young men struggling to escape their overbearing father, it’s tragic and heartrending and – if you’re the right age – unbearably nostalgic. Better yet, it’s rammed with top-notch performances. The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White, as Kerry Von Erich, proves he has a long future outside the show, and Zac Efron is nothing short of a total revelation as his brother Kevin. Honestly, where has he been hiding all these years?

Buddy Oliver! Tilly Ramsay! Welcome to the terrifying age of the nepo chef

Gordon’s daughter got a cookery show first – and now Jamie’s 13-year-old son is at it. Will each young chef be able to obliterate their father’s career and come out on top?

This month, CBBC will debut Cooking Buddies, in which young viewers will be taught to make such varied dishes as spicy tomato pasta and fish finger sandwiches. Taken at face value, this sounds like a tremendous idea. A cookery show for kids has the potential to hit all the classic BBC criteria – it will be fun and educational and hints at a happy future in which I won’t be the one who cooks dinner for my family every day until I die.

However, there is a rub. Cooking Buddies will be presented by Buddy Oliver, Jamie Oliver’s 13-year-old son. Cooking Buddies, of course, follows in the footsteps of 2015’s Matilda and the Ramsay Bunch, in which Gordon Ramsay’s (then 13-year-old) daughter Tilly documented her summer holiday in Los Angeles while also cooking some food. In other words, the age of the nepo chef is upon us.
